The Rhythm Running Behind Your Breath
Inside each nostril is a layer of tissue called turbinate tissue, filled with tiny blood vessels that can swell or shrink depending on how much blood fills them.
Your autonomic nervous system alternates blood flow between your left and right turbinates roughly every two to four hours, a pattern called the nasal cycle.
At any given moment, one side is doing most of the breathing while the other is partly closed down, resting.
You don't usually notice this during the day because both sides together still move enough air, but at night, lying down changes the math.
When you lie on one side, a pressure reflex increases blood flow specifically to the nostril on that same side, swelling it further.
That's why the nostril pressed toward the mattress is almost always the blocked one, and why rolling over swaps which side feels stuffy.
